Abu Yazid al-Bestami (ca. 801–874) was a Muslim prophet who lived between the years of 801 and 874.
Notable Islamic mystic who created the Sufism ecstatic school.
He was born in the city of Bestam in northern Persia and was
known as al-Bestami.
Hindu Vedanta is considered to have influenced his idea that
the spiritual search may lead to total absorption and connection with deity.
His heterodoxy was disrespectful to orthodox Islam in this
regard.
Starting with the Sufi notion of approaching god in the same
way as a lover approaches his or her beloved, al-Bestami believed that love was
a barrier in and of itself.
Al-Bestami was credited with a number of miracles.
