In southern Indian mythology, the deity Skanda (also known as Murugan) falls in love with and marries Valli, a young girl from a tribe of tribal hunters.
Despite his previous marriage to the goddess Devasena, who
was granted to him by Indra and the established Hindu gods, the marriage takes
place.
Murugan's marriage to Valli is a symbol of his ties to the
land, and it most likely represents his previous life as a tribal god.
The wedding is said to have taken place in Tiruttani, Tamil
Nadu, although he is also said to have settled in Kataragama, Sri Lanka.
