Hinduism - What Is Urdhvabahu?

 

("one with an upraised arm") A person who engages in a particularly gruesome kind of physical humiliation in which one or both arms are constantly elevated.

The muscles atrophy after a while, and the arms can no longer be lowered.

Although urdhvabahu is not widely practiced, it has a long history as a kind of ascetic discipline.

As with many forms of extreme physical austerity, this is said to provide tremendous spiritual awareness and magical power.
