Temple and holy
location (tirtha) in the Garhwal area of the Himalayas, fourteen miles by trail
north of the settlement of Ukhimath, in the valley between the Mandakini and
the Alakananda Rivers.
The god Shiva in his form as the "Lofty Lord" is
the temple's presiding deity.
Tungnath is part of the Panchkedar, a network of five sacred
sites in the Garhwal region.
The other four are Kedarnath, Kalpeshvar, Rudranath, and
Madmaheshvar.
Because Shiva is said to reside in the Himalayas, this
network of five sites is viewed as a symbolic representation of Shiva's body.
Of these five, Tungnath is considered to be Shiva’s arm.
