Swami Vivekananda
started the Ramakrishna Mission, a Hindu religious organization, in 1897 to
propagate the religious teachings of Vivekananda's guru, Ramakrishna.
The Ramakrishna Mission has been committed to spiritual
upliftment as well as humanitarian assistance from its founding, based on Swami
Vivekananda's insight that India required both material and religious
development.
The mission has attempted to fulfill part of this obligation
by printing low-cost editions of holy books, including but not limited to Rama
Krishna and Swami Vivekananda's teachings, and by sponsoring social service in
the realms of education, medical care, and other charity endeavors.

Study in Religious Change," in Robert D. Baird (ed. ), Religion in Modern
India, 1998, for further information.
