A follower of the
sage Vyasa, who is claimed to have repeated the puranas to other renunciants in
the Naimisha forest, according to Hindu legend.
The puranas are a sort of religious scripture that collects
a variety of holy information, ranging from legendary narratives to ceremonial
instruction to exaltation of different sacred locations (tirthas) and
activities.
Individual puranas are often sectarian in nature, with the
goal of promoting the worship of one of the Hindu gods, such as Vishnu, Shiva,
or the Goddess.
According to the mythology cited above, there are eighteen
traditional puranas, and Suta is listed as the storyteller in several of them.
