Sumantra is a minister
of King Dasharatha, Rama's father, in the Ramayana, the older of the two major
Indian epics.
Sumantra takes Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother
Lakshmana to the Ganges to ensure that the trio follows their commands.
Sumantra bids Rama a sorrowful goodbye as the three board
the boat on which the boatman Guha would transport them over the river.
