A monkey king and
ally of the deity Rama in his quest to reclaim his stolen wife Sita in the
Ramayana, the earlier of the two major Indian epics.
Sugriva and his brother Bali control the kingdom of Kishkindha together, but because to a misunderstanding, they become adversaries.
They are battling a wizard who has sought sanctuary in a
cave on one occasion.
Bali enters after teaching Sugriva how to recognize specific
signals that would reveal who of them has been slain.
Sugriva waits a year outside the cave before seeing the omen
announcing his brother's death, which the crafty magician has orchestrated
while he is dying.
Sugriva comes home, believing his brother is dead, after
rolling a stone over the cave's opening to imprison the magician.
Bali ultimately escapes the cave and, believing that his
brother has taken advantage of the situation to get rid of him, exiles Sugriva
and adopts Sugriva's wife.
Sugriva is exiled until he forms an alliance with Rama, who
murders Bali by shooting him as Sugriva confronts him.
Sugriva is a loyal friend of Rama after reclaiming his
kingship, and his monkey army help in the invasion of Lanka.
