Krishna's boyhood buddies who represents god's grace and providence in Hindu
mythology.
Sudama becomes impoverished later in life and, at his wife's
prodding, travels to his boyhood buddy, who is now the king of Dwaraka, to
plead for assistance.
Sudama is so destitute that the only present he can give
Krishna is a little packet of dried rice, which Krishna gratefully accepts.
Sudama returns home without asking for anything after an
excellent visit during which they reminisce about previous times.
In some of the tales, Sudama's lapse is explained as a
result of humiliation, while in others, he is shown as having had such a good
time that he just forgets.
Sudama is concerned about his wife's reaction on his return
voyage, but when he comes, he learns that his hut has been converted into a
palace by Krishna's heavenly power, and he has never been impoverished since.
