Hinduism - What Is Stridhan?

("wealth of a lady") Term referring to any property that a woman owns or inherits, which often includes any gifts given to her by her family or money earned by her.

stridhan was not considered part of the family property under patrilineal inheritance systems specified by books such as the Mitakshara and the Dayabhaga, but rather a woman's personal property that she might dispose of as she pleased.

Although Stridhan may be inherited, the inheritance arrangements were not the same as for familial property.

The major inheritors of a woman's estate were her children; for women without daughters, the estate passed to her husband and his heirs, or to her birth family.
