Hinduism - Who Is A Snataka?

("one who has taken a bath") This is the term given to a young man who has completed the samavartana samskara, the life-cycle rite that marks the end of his stage as a celibate student (brahmacharin) and his return to his parents house in dharma literature.

The wash was the most crucial part of the process, following which he changed into new garments to symbolize his new rank.

He was expected to approach his guru for permission before doing this, as well as offer him his teacher's fee (dakshina), both as payment for services performed and as a symbol of respect.

A young man who completed this ceremony would be entitled to marry, and the literature suggests that this should happen quickly.
