(“remembering”) One of the most common religious rituals
that appears on lists of religiously praiseworthy deeds.
Smarana is most often connected with deities, but it may
also be associated with holy locations (tirthas), one's spiritual teacher
(guru), or even specific acts of devotion.
This practice entails thinking about a god, person,
location, or item all of the time, and in the case of a deity, it often entails
mental recitation of the deity's name.
The main focus of this practice is to develop habitual
behavioral patterns that will have long-term positive consequences on one's
character.
