Shurpanakha is a Sanskrit word that means
"strength" in English.
(with "winnowing-fan-like" nails) Shurpanakha is
the sister of Ravana, the demon-king of Lanka, according to the Ramayana, the
older of the two major Indian epics.
Despite the fact that she is a minor character in the epic,
she is crucial to the story's progress.
Shurpanakha, Ravana's sister, is a powerful demon lady who
is free to marry anyone she wishes.
She comes across Rama, the epic's protagonist, while
wandering through the jungle one day and is instantly enamored by his lovely
figure.
She approaches him and proclaims her passion for him while
assuming the form of a gorgeous lady.
Rama informs her that his brother Lakshmana would be a
better match for her since he is already married.
Shurpanakha feels enraged as Lakshmana explains why he is
unable to marry her as well.
Shurpanakha attempts to kill Rama's wife Sita after
realizing that she is the main hindrance to her aspirations, and Lakshmana
mutilates her by cutting off her ears and nose in the ensuing conflict.
Shurpanakha returns to Ravana's court, shrieking with
anguish and shame, swearing that her offense shall be retaliated for.
After their brothers Khara and Dushana are slain in a direct
attack on Rama, Ravana seeks vengeance by capturing Sita, which leads to his
demise.
