In Hindu mythology,
the goddess Kali kills a demon in the Devimahatmya, the Goddess's oldest and
most significant scripture.
Shumbha is a commander in the army of Mahishasura, a demon
whom the Goddess assumes shape to defeat, along with his brother Nishumbha.
Shumbha and Nishumbha can overcome the gods and take control
of heaven thanks to a heavenly gift bestowed to Mahishasura, but they can't
stand up to the Goddess's strength.
