Shringeri Math - The Jyotir Math, Sharada Math, and
Govardhan Math are the other three maths or monastic centers said to have been
built by the renowned scholar Shankaracharya.
The Shringeri Math is in the southern sector, in the city of
Shringeri in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, and is linked with one of
the four geographical corners of the Indian subcontinent.
Shankaracharya is widely regarded as the founder of the
Dashanami Sanyasis, India's most revered Hindu ascetic order.
Dashanami ("ten names") ascetics are Shiva
followers (bhakta) who are separated into 10 divisions, each with its own name.
Each of the four bigger organizational groups—Anandawara,
Bhogawara, Bhuri wara, and Kitawara—has two or three of the 10 divisions and is
affiliated with one of the four holy centers.
The Shringeri Math is affiliated with the Bhuriwara
community.
