Shantiniketan (meaning "peace dwelling") -
About 90 miles northeast of Calcutta, in the Birbhum region
of West Bengal.
The Indian poet and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore
(1861–1941) created Vishva-Bharati University in 1921.
The university's mission as an educational institution was
to provide an education that met people's material and spiritual requirements,
allowing them to grow into well-rounded individuals.
It achieved this in part through supporting the arts and
emphasizing the interdependence of nature and humans, both of which were
important to Tagore.
