Sayana (14th c.) - A
brahmin scholar from southern India who is most known for his commentaries on
the Vedas, Hinduism's oldest and most authoritative holy writings.
Sayana's commentary is significant not just because it is a
superb intellectual work, but also because it is widely thought to be the first
time the Veda was ever written down, about three thousand years after some of
the hymns were produced.
Because the meanings of many of the terms had been lost in
the time since the Vedas were compiled, some of Sayana's commentary was merely
explanatory.
Sayana's work is regarded as a thorough and trustworthy
explanation of the book.
