Satyakama - ("He who seeks the truth") In the
early speculative literature Chandogya Upanishad, a legendary character known
for his dedication to the truth.
Satyakama, who wishes to become a celibate student
(brahmacharin), inquires about his extended family from his mother so that he
may provide this knowledge to his instructor.
His mother, Jabala, responds that she has no idea who his
father is and instructs him to adopt her name and call himself Satyakama
Jabala.
Satyakama relates the whole tale when his instructor Gautama
asks him about his family background.
Gautama initiates him right away, impressed by his honesty.
In current times, this narrative is often quoted to
highlight the value of one's conduct above one's birth.
