The second of the four Vedas, the oldest and most
authoritative Hindu religious writings, is traditionally regarded as the second
of the four Vedas.
The Sama Veda is a collection of hymns that have been
organized for singing as part of Vedic sacrifices (yajna).
While the singing patterns are largely borrowed from the Rg
Veda, they are significantly more elaborative than the Rg Veda's plain
chanting.
As a result, the Sama Veda is said to have emerged later
than the Rg Veda.
