Festival
commemorating the birth of medieval bhakti poet-saint Ravidas, who was born
near Benares, on the full moon in the lunar month of Magh (January–February).
Ravidas had a poor social position due to his birth into the
untouchable caste of leather workers (chamar).
His poetry is written in a per sonal voice, and it contrasts
his humble station with the respect and acclaim he achieved through his
dedication to God.
Ravidas is regarded as a role model by many members of the
lower classes today, and his birthday is commemorated with zeal.
