Fortified city in
Uttar Pradesh, situated south of and across the Ganges from the holy city of
Benares.
The Maharajas of Benares erected their fort on this spot
because it was relatively simple to defend, and they still reside there,
despite the fact that they no longer rule.
Ramnagar is known for hosting the world's oldest and most
traditional Ram Lila, a month-long dramatization of the epic Ramayana.
The royal family continues to play a key symbolic role in
the Ram Lila production, in addition to supporting it and paying its
expenditures.
Anuradha Kapur's Actors, Pilgrims, Kings, and Gods,
