Rajrajeshvar Temple is a massive temple dedicated to the deity
Shiva in his avatar as "Lord of Kings" in Tanjore, Tamil Nadu.
Tanjore was the Chola dynasty's capital, and this temple,
erected about 1000 C.E. by Chola monarch Raja Raja, exudes the confidence of a
rising kingdom.
The temple is an extension of the most basic kind of Hindu
temple, with a garbhagrha covered by a spire, yet it is magnificent in its
magnitude.
The tower above the central shrine is 190 feet tall and
seems considerably taller because to the lack of distracting objects that would
obstruct the eye's upward path.
It is topped with a single chunk of stone weighing an
estimated eighty tons, which was installed by a four-mile-long ramp.
