In Hindu mythology, he is the son of Hiranyakashipu, the demon king, and a great devotee (bhakta) of Vishnu.
Hiranyakashipu has obtained a succession of heavenly boons
that make him nearly invulnerable by rigorous physical asceticism (tapas), yet
despite his strength, his son Prahlada refuses to abandon his devotion to
Vishnu.
Prahlada's dedication, in the face of his father's rising
pride, leads to an escalating pattern of abuse, culminating in his demand that
Prahlada worship him instead of Vishnu.
As the Man-lion avatar, Vishnu comes to Prahlada's rescue,
slays Hiranyakashipu, and installs Prahlada as king in his stead.
