Pradhana means "principal" in Sanskrit.
Pradhana is another term for prakrti, the "primal
substance" that the Samkhyas view to be the initial principle from which
all material things have developed in the Samkhya philosophical system.
The term pradhana is used to describe the goddess Shakti as
the active principle underlying the creation of the cosmos in the secret,
ritual-based religious practice known as tantra.
The term is feminine in grammar, with a meaning of fertility
and fecundity.
