(“bile”) One of the
three humours (tridosha) in ayurveda, or traditional Indian medicine, together
with vata ("air") and kapha ("phlegm").
Every individual possesses all three humours, but one is
generally dominant, and this distinguishes a person in certain ways,
particularly in terms of health, digestion, and metabolism.
Because bile is a liquid involved in digestion, which is
said to take place via inner burning, Pitta is related with the elements of
fire and water.
Pitta is a fiery, ardent, and dynamic humor, and persons who
have it as their primary humor are considered to have a strong will, be
excellent leaders, and have good digestion.
At the same time, this inner fire causes them physical
discomfort in hot temperatures, and they must learn to control their fiery
personalities in order to perform at their best.
