("The Five
Kedars") is a story about a group of five people who live in Kedarnath,
Rudranath, Tungnath, Madmaheshvar, and Kalpeshvar are the collective names for
a network of five holy Shiva shrines dispersed across the Garhwal area of the
Himalayas: Kedarnath, Rudranath, Tungnath, Madmaheshvar, and Kalpeshvar.
Each location is associated with a different component of
Shiva's body, allowing for a series of connections between the deity's body and
the land itself—which is understandable given Shiva's alleged residence in the
Himalayas.
Shiva's back, Madmaheshvar's navel, Tungnath's arm,
Rudranath's visage, and Kalpeshvar's matted hair are all represented by
Kedarnath (jata).
