The Gaudas and Kanaujias, who cover much of northern India;
the Maithilas in northern Bihar; the Utkalas in the coastal state of Orissa;
and the Saraswats, who are historically located in numerous widely dispersed
locations, are the five primary northern Indian brahmin groups.
One clan resided in modern-day Pakistan's coastal area of
Sindh, however most went to Bombay following Partition in 1947.
Another group lived in pre-partition Punjab, albeit they,
too, have migrated away from the section of Punjab that is now part of
Pakistan.
The Gauda Saraswats, a third branch, may be found on a
limited stretch of shoreline in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.
