The concepts of
auspiciousness and inauspiciousness are firmly ingrained in Hindu culture, and
are founded on the belief that some items bring good fortune by their inherent
nature, while others bring bad fortune.
The concept of omens is an extension of this concept; omens
are significant not because they generate good or ill fortune in and of
themselves, but because they represent current situations.
According to this concept, fortunate circumstances will
naturally produce positive omens, whereas unfavorable circumstances will
produce bad omens.
Omens are markers that may be used to assess the present
situation and make any required modifications.
For example, if one encounters an unfavorable individual
while leaving the house to perform business, one should return home and start
again, lest the effort be unsuccessful.
