Nivrttinath Jnaneshvar (1268–1294?) was the elder brother of Jnaneshvar, the first famous poet-saint of the Varkari Panth, a religious group focused on the worship of the Hindu deity Vithoba at his temple in Pandharpur, Maharashtra today.
Although his younger brother grew more prominent,
Nivrttinath is known as Jnaneshvar's religious instructor (guru).
Gainanath, Nivrttinath's instructor, was a direct pupil of
Gorakhnath, the famed ascetic, according to tradition.
In the Jnaneshvari, Jnaneshvar portrays himself as a student
in Gorakhnath's line, indicating that they are related.
See George Weston Briggs' Gorakhnath and the Kanphata Yogis,
1973, for further details.
