In Hindu mythology,
the name of a demon slain by the goddess Kali in the Devimahatmya, the Goddess's
oldest and most significant scripture.
Nishumbha, along with his brother Shumbha, is a commander in
the army of a demon called Mahishasura.
Shumbha and Nishumbha are able to defeat the gods and take
possession of heaven thanks to a heavenly blessing provided to Mahishasura.
They are consumed, however, by Kali, who appears as a
manifestation of the Goddess's wrath.
