The Nayars are a
Hindu jati who, in historic Kerala, were the major landholding caste.
Jatis are traditional Indian society's endogamous groupings
whose social position is dictated by the group's hereditary vocation.
The Nayars were one of the few Indian tribes that adopt
matrilinear succession, which meant that both descent and inheritance were
carried down via the mother's line.
