On the Hugli River,
some 65 miles north of Calcutta, is a city and holy place (tirtha).
The Bengali saint Chaitanya (1486–1533) is said to have been
born at Navadvip, however the same claim has been made for the city of Mayapur
on the opposite side of the river in the twentieth century.
E. Alan Morinis, Pilgrimage in the Hindu Tradition, 1984,
has a lot of material on Navadvip.
