Narak Chaturdashi is
a religious festival observed on the sixteenth day (chaturdashi) of the dark,
waning half of the lunar month Kartik (October–November).
On this day, people worship and give gifts to the deity
Yama.
They burn a lantern in his honor in the evening.
Yama is the king of the underworld and the judge of the
dead; he assesses the acts of the dead and punishes those who have done wrong.
Those who observe Narak Chaturdashi religiously are said to
be exempted from the wrath of hell.
