Mauritius is an Indian Ocean island country 1,200 miles east of Africa's coast.
There is a sizable Hindu diaspora in Mauritius.
Indians were initially transported to Mauritius as
indentured agricultural laborers, in this instance as workers on sugar
plantations, as in many other situations.
They now make up over 75% of the island's population and are
in charge of the country's political structure.
The Hindus of Mauritius have adopted India's holy geography:
a southern lake known as Grand Bassin is said to have an underground connection
to the Ganges River, and the lake has become a major pilgrimage destination.
