A northern Indian trade community called after the Marwar area near Jodhpur in Rajasthan, where it originated.
The Marwaris have expanded across northern India, and many
have amassed enormous fortune.
The Marwaris are portrayed as vicious and cutthroat in their
economic practices, yet they are also generous in their charitable gifts,
reflecting traditional religious devotion.
The most powerful Marwari families, such as the Birlas,
continue to dominate significant portions of the Indian economy.
All northern Indian political parties seek Marwari support
and patronage while making decisions.
