Mantrashastra is the term given to the
body of knowledge devoted to the categorization, interpretation, and use of
mantras or holy formulas.
Some of this knowledge is written down, but due to the
secrecy of the subject matter and the traditional emphasis on oral, personal
transmission from a religious teacher, most of it is only available orally.
