Mandu is a hilltop fort located approximately 70 miles south of Indore in southern Madhya Pradesh.
Although Mandu is now desolate, it was the seat of a minor
kingdom until the sixteenth century, when it was absorbed as a tributary state
under the Moghul empire.
Mandu was a major hub for the Rajasthani style of miniature
painting in the early seventeenth century.
The flat perspective is a defining feature of Rajasthani
art.
Bands of vibrant colors serve as a background to the
painting, giving it visual strength.
