Traditional Indian
society was designed as a collection of endogamous subgroups known as jatis
("birth"), in which marriage was only permitted between members of
the same group by law.
The jatis were structured (and their social rank
established) by their hereditary vocation, which each group had a monopoly
upon.
Blacksmithing and ironworking were the Lohars' ancestors'
professions.
