Pravahana Jaivali is a member of the warrior (kshatriya) caste who teaches members of the scholarly-priestly (brahmin) caste in the book.
Silaka Shalavatya and Caikitayana Dalbhya are his first pupils, followed by Shvetaketu Aruneya and his father Gautama.
This is one of numerous events in the Upanishads in which kshatriyas teach brahmins, reversing the traditional pattern of brahmins serving as religious leaders.
These incidents demonstrate the essence of knowledge as envisaged in the Upanishads: it is bestowed by individual struggle and realization, not by birth or social status.
