Traditional Indian society was organized into jatis ("births"), which were endogamous subgroups (i.e., marriages were only permitted between members of the same group by law).
The group's hereditary occupation, on which each group had a
monopoly, was used to organize the Jatis (and to establish their social
standing).
Farming was the Kunbis' customary employment.
In Gujarat, they were the most powerful landowners.
