The goddess Ganga is said to have fallen from heaven to earth on the tenth day of the bright or waxing half of the lunar month of Jyeshth (May–June), marking the day the Ganges River was born.
Bathing (snana) in holy rivers, notably the Ganges, is the
most important religious ceremony undertaken on this day.
