("a cow's
gift") Gift giving (dana) is popular in Hindu religious practice and is
seen to be a noble act that creates religious merit.
A cow is generally given as a gift to a brahmin.
Traditional religious scriptures extol the gift of a cow as
a compassionate deed as well as a means of atonement for sins.
However, since many of these writings were produced by
brahmins, a tinge of self-interest may be detected.
