("carrying a
plow") Balarama's older brother, the divinity Krishna, was given this
epithet.
Balarama was given this moniker because of his close ties to
farmers and farming, as well as the fact that he used the plow as a weapon on
occasion.
When he was dissatisfied with the route the Yamuna River was
going, he is supposed to have threatened it with his plow.
The prospect of digging a new channel for her prompted the
Yamuna to modify her path to one that pleased Balarama.
