("cow's
mouth") is a word that means "mouth of a cow." High in the
Himalayas, a sacred location (tirtha).
It is situated on the glacier that is the source of the
Bhagirathi River, which is one of the Ganges' tributaries.
Gaumukh is 12 miles upriver from Gangotri, the spot where
the Ganges is ritually worshipped as its source.
The Ganges is said to originate from the mouth of a cow in
Hindu mythology, thus the name.
