Jayapala (d. 1001) was one of the final Pratihara rulers, a northern Indian dynasty with its capital
at Kanyakubja on the Ganges River.
The Turkish emirs, particularly Mahmud of Ghazni, who had
established in modern-day Afghanistan, were threatening the split Hindu
kingdoms in northern India by Jayapala's time.
In a fight with Mahmud, Jayapala was beaten and imprisoned,
and he eventually committed suicide; a short time later, Jayapala's son
Anandapala suffered a devastating loss, resulting in a near-total collapse of
authority in northern India.
Mahmud was able to engage in virtually annual expeditions of plundering and plunder because to the lack of serious resistance.
