(late 16th century) One of the ashtachap poets, a group of eight bhakti (devotional) poets from northern India.
The Pushti Marg, a religious group whose members are Krishna
devotees (bhakta), uses the compositions of these eight poets for liturgical
reasons.
All eight poets were identified as Pushti Marg members and
associates of either the community's founder, Vallabhacharya, or his successor,
Vitthalnath.
Govindswami is said to have been a Vitthalnath associate.
Govindswami writes from the viewpoint of a companion (sakhi)
to Krishna's spouse Radha in his poetry, and in this voice not only paints a
picture of heavenly pastimes, but also an exceptionally realistic image of
mundane village life.
