(5th–8th century?) Philosopher
and textual commentator who is supposed to be the philosopher Shankaracharya's
grand-teacher.
Despite Gaudapada's similarities to some Buddhist ideas,
Shankaracharya believed that Gaudapada was a proponent of Advaita Vedanta, one
of the six schools of traditional Hindu philosophy.
Gaudapada's most renowned work is a commentary on the
Mandukya Upanishad, a holy scripture.
Philosopher and interpreter of the Samkhya school of traditional Hindu philosophy, one of the six schools.
Gaudapada is well known for his commentary on the
Samkhyakarikas, the Samkhya school's fundamental work, attributed to
philosopher Ishvarakrishna.
