Brahmana literature,
one of the later strands of the holy text known as the Vedas, mentions a kind
of priest.
The Brahmanas primarily served as instructions for
performing sacrifice ceremonies, which mostly comprised the burning of gifts in
a holy fire.
These procedures were so intricate that they necessitated the
use of ritual professionals such as the hotr, adhvaryum, udgatr, and brahman.
The sacrificial priest, known as the hotr, chanted passages
from the Rg Veda that were employed in the sacrifice.
