Kartik Purnima is the Hindu New Year.
Bathing (snana) celebration occurs during the full moon in
the lunar month of Kartik (October–November).
An early morning bath in the Ganges or any other holy river
during the festival is said to bestow exceptional religious merit on the
bather.
To take advantage of this chance, people often go to holy rivers.
Sikhs also commemorate the birth of their holy leader, Guru
Nanak, on this day in 1469.
