These bells are normally rung with the bell section
extending from the bottom of the closed hand and have a long straight handle
pointing upward from the top.
Ringing bells are an integral feature of Hindu devotion
(puja), and one of the sixteen customary gifts (upacharas) presented to the god
as part of worship is their beautiful sound.
In Hindu iconography, bells are connected with a variety of
deities, but they are notably associated with the goddess Kali, whose screaming
voice is likened with a tolling bell.
